They spent several hours preparing a grave site for the bodies, using his dagger to dig through the soft soil. Then Mangan offered a blessing on the souls of the two men and one woman, and they placed the broken corpses in the earth, knowing that their spirits were now free. As the horses grazed nearby and Cairdean watched from the treetops, Ashleigh and Mangan worked together in solemn silence, each absorbing the signifigance of what had just occurred between them.

Ashleigh glanced at Mangan as he tamped down the final pile of dirt with his boot. His powerful shoulders bulged and his back rippled with strength—strength that he was offering to her. Could he have secrets inside him and experiences that he had endured that would help him to understand hers? How had he managed to find a way out of the darkness? He was not filled with anger and rage. Instead he was compassionate and kind, seeking to assist others and spread goodwill among men.

She remembered the evening of her parents’ deaths. They had been laughing together, a happy family ready to settle in for the night. Could she ever be happy again?

She shifted closer to Mangan, and he smiled reassuringly, as if he sensed her unease. She smiled back, hopeful for the future. Happiness was possible, and it would not mean she had forgotten her parents’ deaths. In fact, by living her life well she would be celebrating their lives, for they had epitomized joy and thanksgiving.

Ashleigh plucked a few white flowers and tucked them behind her ear then took a deep breath.

Mangan stared at her beautiful face, seeing the relaxed lines and the softening around her eyes. She was so exquisite, like a fragile flower that stood at ease in the midst of a raging storm. The white blossoms in her black hair accentuated the pale flush in her cheeks, making her look like a shy bride.

How could she ever wonder why God would spare her? She was special; her spirit glowed with purity and love. He grinned to himself, seeing the glint of her mischievous nature as she twirled an acorn between her fingers. She was also an imp with a clever mind, and he had best keep a careful eye on her or she might play some trick upon him.

“Are you ready to go?” he asked.

She nodded and patted Francis on the neck before mounting Franco. “They are siblings,” Ashleigh explained. “’Tis rare for two foals to be born of the same mare and survive, but these two did. My mother helped nurse them with a bottle when the mare could not provide enough milk.”

Mangan chuckled, realizing why she had been so adamant about regaining her horses, and why the other gray followed so obediently.

“They are gorgeous. They remind me of the white war stallions that do airs above the ground. Those horses are trained to leap and kick, spin and twist…They are incredible beasts, and worth a fortune.”

Ashleigh shrugged. “We used them mostly to pull the wagon, but I often rode this one for fun.
